What does it mean to host my own WordPress site?

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Thank you Amy for this fantastic question.  So many times we think you understand what hosting means, but for many of the newbies this process may sound confusing to you.

A self hosted WordPress site is when you register and purchase your domain name and also have a hosting account with a reliable hosting provider.  The cost to purchase your domain name and hosting is very inexpensive ($8 – $10 per month for most small biz owners).

You then install the WordPress files to your account with your hosting provider.  Most hosting providers have a simple and very easy to use one button installation for WordPress. (We have a video in our members area that will show you screen by screen what questions they will ask and what you need to put in those boxes).  They install the WordPress platform and you don’t have to worry about any coding or anything like that.

All you need to do is write down the username and password information you supplied the hosting provider so that you can login to your dashboard and update your theme, content and all of the other goodies that come with WordPress.

Thanks again for this fantastic question Amy.

Choosing the right colors for your website

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

List of Common Colors and Their Most Common Meanings

  • Red: energy, passion, excitement, power; also implies aggression, danger.
  • Blue: coolness, spirituality, freedom, patience, loyalty, peace, trustworthiness; can also imply sadness, depression.
  • Yellow: light, optimism, happiness, brightness, joy.
  • Green: life, naturalness, restfulness, health, wealth, prosperity; in certain contexts, can imply decay, toxicity.
  • Orange: friendliness, warmth, approachability, energy, playfulness, courage.
  • Violet: wisdom, sophistication, celebration.
  • White: purity, cleanliness, youth, freshness, peace.
  • Black: power, elegance, secrecy, mystery.
  • Gray: security, maturity, reliability.
  • Pink: romance a feminine color.
  • Brown: comfort, strength, stability, credibility

Take into account who your web audience is (male vs. female, young vs. old, etc.) when choosing colors. If your site is primarily for men choosing pinks may not be the way to go.

Choose a minimum of 3 colors, and use those colors consistently throughout your site.  Keep in mind that visitors will be looking at your site for long periods of time,  choosing colors which are visually appealing and easy on the eye are key.

I suggest choosing from a natural palette of colors and highlighting with one bold color in your logo, keeping the text and body of your site clean and easy to read with a natural color palette.

We love feedback and are looking forward to your comments or questions.

5 Steps to Updating a Website

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

Your website is the first contact your clients will have with you and your company.  So, what is your website telling your potential clients?

Keys to Your Online Web Success:

  1. Is your website visually appealing and is the layout of the site easy to follow?  A cluttered site with poor images will reflect poorly on you.  Take the time to purchase images and have a site designed with clean colors and images that reflect your brand.
  2. Is the content on your site current?  Remove any outdated material or products and services you no longer offer.  Update blog posts, or remove the date on your posts all together.
  3. Does your website speak to the problems and desires of the visitor?  Look at the text of your site, and update the information to speak to your visitors in your own unique voice.  Don’t try and tackle every problem your visitor may be having.  Speak to their top one or two problems on your home page and give them the understanding that you can help them.
  4. Do your visitors trust you and your business?  People do business with those they know, like and trust.  An easy way to create trust with your visitors is by showing testimonials.  Create a system where you are collecting testimonials from current and past customers.  Show testimonials on your site with photos of the actual person, and of course video testimonials are always great too.
  5. Are you giving your visitors value?  Creating value with great content that is easily accessible and is full of your knowledge is a wonderful gift that you can give.  If you are in business you have some type of knowledge, be willing to share that knowledge for FREE and your business will expand.   Give them free “how to” videos, create a special report or audio that they can download.  This will give you the opportunity to collect their email address and continue to share your knowledge with them in the future.

We love feedback and are looking forward to your comments or questions below !

What is a Blog Hop?

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

We’ve been having some fun this week Blog Hopping.

What is a Blog Hop? Or a Blog Party??

A blog hop or party is a list of blogs or specific posts related to a similar topic. Usually a blog “host” sets up a “Hop” on their site. In order to participate in the Blog Hop you need to place a comment on that blog, follow them on one of their social media outlets and hop around to the other blogs and comment or follow them as well.

A well run hop will have the rules of the hop clearly stated.

When you are commenting on the blogs in the hop be sure to tell them where you found them.

2 Main Rules of a Blog Hop:
1) Each participant adds their info to the Link List so others can see it, and comments on other blogs in the hop.
2) Each participant re-posts the Link List on their blog to promote the blog hop.

As a blogger one of your main goals is to create a connection and build your community. This type of link building through a blog hop will help you do that very easily.

A great example of a well run Blog Hop can be found at Moose Tracks and Tater Stacks  (I love the name of this site!)

Mark your Calendars for our first Dog Days of Summer Blog Hop happening August 6 – 13.

I have a list of blogs I like to read and lately that list has been getting longer and longer.  Keeping up with it can be a pain in the ass.

So last week I went on a hunt to find a tool that would make my blog reading and commenting habit a lot easier.

And I found a tool that will help make it much easier for you!  BLOGLOVIN makes it easy for you to read all of your blogs in one place, no need for 30 different web browsers to be open.
